Regular hydrant testing is part of many water districts maintenance program. For new hydrant installs and existing hydrants, regular flow testing offers information of how a water system would perform in the event of an emergency. Water systems are constantly changing from additions and repairs, which changes the operation of the entire system.
Regular hydrant flow testing will prevent any delays in firefighting events by identifying system problems and responding before an event rather than later. Many problems are simple, such as a valve throttled down and never returned to full open position. If a water main is being over developed, hydrant flow testing can also identify the problem and notify the proper personnel. If a fire hydrant is not providing enough water for a fire pump truck in can be taken out of service to prevent use, which would cause damage to the water lines.
