A common leak for fire systems, due to their need for indicating valves, is stem packing. This problem causes water to spray from the gate valve stem. For a valve stem to move in and out of the valve body the stem is sealed with tightly compressed packing. This packing hardens and breaks with time and operation, which causes a spraying leak from the gate valve stem. This does not mean full valve replacment is necessary, because most of the internal parts of these resilient valves could be in great condition.
In the event the riser stem or wafer are not in good condition, these parts can be changed individually as well, rarely making full valve replacement necessary.
